the hummingbird house

Thursday, January 3, 2013

last weekend i met up with my dear friend erin at hummingbird house cafe in the historic los rios district in san juan capistrano, the oldest neighborhood in california!  the los rios district is an awesome little street just steps from the iconic mission san juan.  with little shops and big oak trees, the street is picture perfect.  erin is living abroad in spain and was in town for the holidays.  it was so great to get together and catch up, face to face.  we indulged in vanilla lattes and some sweet treats as we enjoyed the sun on the cafe's outdoor patio.

hummingbird house cafe is located in the lupe combs house. it was moved there in 1878 from an abandoned boom town called forster, a town formerly located on the camp pendleton marine corps base. the building has since been used as a home, general store, and post office at various times.  much like many other buildings and homes on los rios street, the combs house is a piece out of history and a great place to visit!
